and the

New England Publications of the Historical Records Survey

These pages contain files listing selected contents of some genealogical periodicals and the New England publications of the Historical Records Survey. I began these files for my own use but have begun to post them here in the hope that you may find them useful.

I always welcome email containing corrections or additions.

The New England Historical and Genealogical Register

The Register, published quarterly since 1847 by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, is the oldest genealogical journal in the nation. Its contents include many articles concerning families outside of the New England states.

This is an Adobe Acrobat PDF file. It contains the consolidated contents of all issues of the Register from Volume I (1847) to date, as well as noting which articles were reprinted in fifteen volumes published by Genealogical Publishing Company. Those volumes, selected and introduced by Gary Boyd Roberts, are:

Mayflower Source Records (1986) [MSR]
Genealogies of Mayflower Families, 3 vols. (1985) [GMF]
English Origins of New England Families, First Series, 3 vols. (1984) [EONEF1]
English Origins of New England Families, Second Series, 3 vols. (1985) [EONEF2]
Genealogies of Connecticut Families, 3 vols. (1983) [GenCTF]
Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, 2 vols. (1989) [GenRIF]

The abbreviations in square brackets above are used in the file to indicate the volume in which an article or series was reprinted. A few articles appear in two different series of volumes. All of these volumes are also available on CR-ROM. MSR and GMF are on Family Tree Maker's Family Archives CD#171: Genealogies of Mayflower Families, 1500s-1800s; EONEF1 and EONEF2 on their CD#181: English Origins of New England Families, 1500s-1800s; GenCTF on their CD#179: Connecticut Genealogies #1, 1600s-1800s; and GenRIF on their CD#180: Rhode Island Genealogies #1, 1600s-1800s.

I will add the contents of each new issue of the Register as it is published.

At the beginning of the file is a section explaining the format of the entries.

New England Publications of the Historical Records Survey

The Historical Records Survey was a project of the Works Progress Administration from 1936 to 1943. Its goal was to conduct a national survey of state, county and municipal records. Its publications include a frustratingly small, but nevertheless useful, set of inventories of New England records, primarily of town records. Most of these publications are available to subscribers of Heritage Quest Online.

This is an Adobe Acrobat PDF file. It contains a list of New England publications of the Historical Records Survey from 1937 to 1942. This list contains all of the salient information that I have so far discovered, and the file will be revised whenever I discover new information about these publications.
