A newspaper often had a succession of titles on its masthead during the course of its publication. Some libraries list newspapers by the last title used, followed by previous titles. Other libraries list all holdings under the most common, most familiar or most recent title. For each title library holdings are given.
The Nemasket Gazette was published from 1852 to 1857, and was continued as the Middleboro Gazette from 1857 to 1859 and as the Middleboro Gazette and Old Colony Advertiser from 1859 to 1868, and again as the Middleboro Gazette from 1869 onward. Microfilmed copies are available at the Boston Public Library Microtext Department. The Middleborough Public Library and the American Antiquarian Society also have holdings.

NEHGS is nation's oldest genealogical society, founded in 1845. It offers unsurpassed resources for New England research including the Boston research library of over 200,000 volumes. Members not in the Boston area appreciate their extensive online resources including all issues of The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, the nation's oldest genealogical journal, published quarterly since 1847. Online resources also include member access to vital records through 1915, an ever-growing collection of online books, and databases derived from some of the Society's immense manuscript holdings.
Originally the Wampanoag settlement Nemasket, what would become Middleborough was visited by Stephen Hopkins and Edward Winslow during their 1621 trip to meet Ousamequin. The first English settlers in the area were were Elizabeth Poole and her company, who settled at Titicut in 1637. The town of Middleborough was incorporated June 1, 1669 and suffered greatly in King Philip's War, being abandoned by the settlers. Following the war it was rebuilt and resettled by order of the General Court. Middleborough men served in later colonial wars. The first church was established in 1694 and the first record of a school teacher is from 1703.
