Perhaps as early as 1649 William Barstow settled within the present limits of Hanover, according to John Barry, author of A Historical Sketch of the Town of Hanover, Mass., with Family Genealogies. He lived near the North River close to what is now Hanover Four Corners and built a bridge about where the current Washington St. bridge is located.
The town of Hanover was incorporated June 14, 1727, from portions of Abington and Scituate. In 1728 the first church was built, and about that time the first school opened.
Early industry included shipyards on the North River, grain and lumber mills, and an early iron industry that eventually gave rise to tack factories. Prominent among later industries were shoe factories and National Fireworks.
As is the case with many South Shore towns, most of the industry and farming are long gone, and the town is now primarily residential.
