        * All but the first letter of the surname is broken off from this stone, also the last two figures of the year.   Andrew Samson, son of Miles and Sarah, was born 28 September, 1714 [Ante 9: 230]; his will was made 5 November, 1785, and it was proved 4 December, 1786.   [Plym. Co. Prob. Rcds., 30: 40, 41.]   Winsor's History of Duxbury, published in 1849, says on page 302 that this Andrew died "Sep. 6, 1776, aet. nearly 72," the age given clearly proving the year to be an error for 1786.   Vinton's Giles Memorial, published in 1864, says on page 403 that this Andrew died "Sept. 6, 1786, ae. 72."   The portion broken off from the stone was too narrow for the name to have been Southworth, and it seems to be clear that this is the stone of Andrew Samson.—EDITOR.
