In that dread hour with a faint pang,
Tearing the tender fibers of the heart,
His immortal spirit struggled to be free.
Then, even then, his hope forsook him not,
For it existed beyond the narrow verge
Of the cold sepulchre.   The petty joys
Of fleeting life, indignantly he spurned,
And rested on the bosom of God.

   45.   Bethia, wife of Joshua Ames, born Jan. 21, 1773, died Sept. 14, 1860.
